The Surdo is a Brazilian bass drum usually made of wood or metal with skin on both sides. Traditionally used in samba and other derivative styles the surdo has been within this niche since the carnival in the 1920’s remaining relevant to this day in typical modern musical styles of Brazil.

Recording using a Neumann TLM 102, a Sennheiser MD421 and a AKG C414. The preamp section used was a pair of Chandler Germ 500 MK2 and a Millennia HV-35 with the Shadow Hills Dual Vandergraph Compressor (-1DB GR) on AKG C414, routed in a Apogee Ensemble MK2.

We have a performance of the percussion master, Robson Batata, bringing an extensive variation of rhythms and grooves, in addition to modern rhythmic cells that allow more versatility use for Surdo 2.
